Orthodontics: giving you the smile you want

Orthodontics is a dental term you have probably heard and perhaps wondered what it is. It is the word for a branch of dentistry concerned with teeth straightening, an area of work that has been around for almost as long as people have had teeth to straighten. These days, orthodontics has undergone major advances in terms of materials and techniques, and now offers so much more than the iconic fixed metal brace. At Harley Street Dental Clinic we provide a range of no fuss, and subtle orthodontic treatments designed to straighten adults’ teeth.

There are also often long waiting lists, during which time your child’s issues can increase in severity.

Our orthodontists are Dr Emma Lang, and Dr Darsh Patel, both of whom are recognised by the General Dental Council as having reached the level of Specialist in orthodontics.

When is the best time for orthodontic treatment for children?

This varies for each patient, but for children, we generally recommend coming in to see the orthodontist in Harley Street for an initial consultation between the ages of seven and nine. By this age the teeth are well enough developed for our dentists to spot the early signs of issues with crowded, gappy, twisted or misaligned teeth, allowing us to treat them promptly and simply with less invasive treatments than if they get left for later in life.

We can also treat adults

The advances in treatment materials and techniques have led to an increasing number of adults deciding to have their teeth straightened. We believe the health benefits make adult teeth straightening treatment very worthwhile. Straighter teeth are so much easier to keep in good oral condition, thereby reducing the build-up of plaque and the risk of decay, which can lead to other issues and may even result in tooth loss.

Fixed metal braces have, for many cases, been superseded by more subtle treatments using discreet fixed braces and clear removable aligners.
