Endodontics

Endodontics, or root canal treatment is enough to have the most brave patients feeling a little nervous! However at Harley Sreet Dental Clinic a potentially daunting endodontic treatment is made easy by our specialist Endodontist, Dr. Nectaria Polycarpou. With years of experience and her kindhearted nature, Nectaria is skillfully able to restore the most difficult-to-manage cases in a comfortable and friendly environment.

Endodontic treatment is required when the inside of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to decay or trauma. The procedure involves the endodontist removing the source of infection under a binocular microscope, cleaning and shaping the space inside the root and then filling it to avoid future infection. Local anaesthesia is provided to ensure patient comfort, and the entire procedure should take one or two visits.

Our Endodontist

Dr Polycarpou is a consultant endodontist. Alongside working as a specialist at the Harley Street Dental Clinic she also co-developed and currently runs the postgraduate diploma in endodontic practice at Barts and The London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry with a team of three specialist endodontists. As one of UK’s leading endodontists, Dr Polycarpou only uses the most advanced materials and techniques. She also has a special interest in facial pain in relation to endodontics and clinical outcome of root canal treatment. Dr Polycarpou is very focused on patient comfort and realises that the prospect of visiting an endodontist can make many people nervous. She hence ensures that all treatments are performed in a comfortable, considerate environment using the latest advances in pain free dentistry.

Do I require endodontic treatment?

You may need endodontic treatment if decay has resulted in your tooth being inflamed or infected, or if you have suffered trauma to the teeth. When teeth are traumatised the nerve usually dies. However to answer the question with certainty you will need to consult either directly with an endodontist or a dentist who then refers you to one if necessary.

Is root canal treatment successful?

If the treatment is performed by a qualified endodontist it usually has a very high chance of success. Most endodontists agree that the success rate of the treatment ranges from about 85-95%. However this naturally varies depending on factors such as extent of infection, response of the individual to treatment and possible complications.

Is root canal treatment painful?

At the Harley Street Dental Clinic we are focused on providing pain free dentistry. Root canal treatment performed by a skilled endodontist should be pain free. Root canal treatment is usually performed under local anaesthesia taking between 1-2 hours to complete. However depending on the extent of treatment required there may be need for more than one visit. There may be some discomfort post treatment for which we will provide you with an adequate level of analgesia.
