Dental Implants - Conscious Sedation

Many people hesitate to consult implant dentists regarding dental implant treatment, because of a general misconception that the treatment is very painful. This myth seems to have arisen from the fact that dental implants are placed into the jawbone after a hole is 'drilled' in the jawbone, following an 'incision' made in the gum tissue. Most people find it hard to believe that such a procedure could be relatively painless.

Due to modern advancements in dentistry and anaesthetics, teeth implant treatment can usually be performed quite painlessly. Implant dentists generally use 3D computer imaging technology prior to the procedure, to locate sensitive nerves, and ensure that they are not touched. In addition, they may use different types of anaesthetics, such as local anaesthesia, nitrous oxide and conscious sedation, to make sure that the patient does not feel any sensation, while teeth implants are being placed in their mouth.

What is conscious sedation?

Conscious sedation is a form of anaesthesia that is sometimes used in dental implant treatment. Also referred to as IV twilight sleep or IV sedation, it is generally considered to be very safe. Conscious sedation is a type of sedation, during which a patient has an altered level of consciousness, but can respond to verbal instructions. It is often advised to sedate patients who suffer from dental anxieties, or patients who are unable to cooperate with care providers. Patient's who are administered conscious sedation, while dental implants are being fitted, usually have no memory of the procedure afterwards.

During conscious sedation, anaesthetics are given intravenously, which can be adjusted according to the needs of the patient. For lengthy procedures, such as when many teeth implants are required to be placed in the jaw, the drugs can be re-administered to ensure that the patient is comfortable at all times. Various monitors may be used to keep a check on the patient during the procedure. This includes automatic blood pressure cuffs, pulse oximetres and EKG.
