Teeth Implants - Potential Complications

Over the last decade, numerous people have undergone teeth implant treatment to replace missing teeth. Teeth implants usually consist of small metal screws that are placed in the jawbone, over which prosthetic teeth are later mounted. If you are wondering if dental implants could be right for you, consulting an experienced implant dentist for a thorough assessment would be a good starting point.

Dental implant treatment has a success rate of more than 98 percent. Although usually very safe, like with all types of surgery, implant treatment also carries a risk of complications developing. Though very rare, in cases where such complications do arise, further treatment may be recommended by the implant dentist, which may sometimes even include surgery

Below are some common complications which may develop after dental implant treatment:

  • Infection: This usually occurs within a few weeks of teeth implants being placed in the jawbone. It is characterised by pain, fever or redness around the bone and gums. If a patient experiences such symptoms, they should consult with their dentist immediately for appropriate treatment.
  • Rejection: Sometimes a patient's body may reject foreign tissue or metal that is transplanted in the body, during surgery. In dental implant treatment, such biocompatibility issues usually refer to the failure of bone to integrate with either the bone graft material or the implant.
  • Breakage: A majority of implants are made from highly durable materials like titanium, which do not bend or break easily. However, in extremely rare cases dental implants might get damaged, for which it may have to be removed and replaced with a new tooth implant.
  • Overload: After dental implants are placed, patients are usually advised to reduce biting pressures, until the bone around the implants heal satisfactorily. If patients do not heed this advice, they may sometimes experience pain and bleeding around the implantation site, which may require a visit to the dentist.
