Find a children’s dentist to give your young ones the best start in life

Visiting the dentist from an early age helps to give your child the best chances of enjoying good oral health for life. At Harley Street Dental Practice we have a dedicated children’s dentistry team, headed up by Professor Ramn Bedi, a leading expert in paediatric dentistry.

hsdc-children-dentistry-newProfessor Bedi is the chairman of the Global Child Dental Fund and co-chair of a global expert committee on caries prevention and management. He runs a specialist children’s dental team here at our Harley Street clinic.

By taking the time to form a relationship of trust with young patients, talking to them and explaining their treatment as well as talking to their parents, Professor Bedi and his team help children to learn that visiting the dentist is nothing to be afraid of; they will soon come to see it as a positive experience, and the dentist as a friendly face they look forward to seeing at check-ups.

Why early years dental visits are vital

Children in the UK still have an unacceptably high level of tooth decay, and whilst this is starting to improve there is still much work to be done. Tooth decay can be painful and unpleasant for patients of all ages, and the need for more invasive treatment such as extraction of badly decayed teeth can be a traumatic experience for young patients who are not used to visiting the dental practice.

A bad experience in childhood is one of the leading cause of dental phobia in adults. Regular visits to the dentist not only help to prevent tooth decay and other problems from arising in the first place, but – with a skilled children’s practitioner such as the team at our Harley Street clinic – also help to make more invasive procedures more bearable should they be needed. Knowing that the dentist cares and that treatment will be pain-free helps young patients relax.

Finding a good children’s dentist

A good children’s dentist can help your child develop good oral health habits and have a healthy mouth for life. At Harley Street Dental Clinic we have a dedicated children’s dental team, led by paediatric dental specialist Professor Raman Bedi. Professor Bedi is chairman of the Global Child Dental Fund and co-chair of a global expert committee on caries management and prevention.

childrens dentistMany patients who experience fear or phobia of the dentist in later life cite a bad experience in childhood as the trigger to their problems. By seeing a specialist in children’s dentistry from an early age, children will learn that visiting the dental practice is nothing to be afraid of. Professor Bedi and his team here at our Harley Street clinic are highly experienced in working with children and young people, taking the time to build up a good rapport and a relationship of trust with young patients and talking to them as well as to their parents, presenting information in an engaging and age-appropriate manner.

Dentists remain concerned at the high levels of tooth decay in children in the UK. This is painful and distressing for the child, and research has also found a link between untreated tooth decay in young people and health problems including diabetes and heart disease in later life. You can help to prevent this by bringing your child to visit the dentist regularly and by helping them to establish a good tooth-cleaning routine at home.

At our Harley Street practice we offer preventative treatments, including fluoride varnish and fissure sealant, which help to strengthen children’s teeth and prevent tooth decay from developing. Your child will also learn the best way to brush their teeth at home and how too much sugary food and drink can have bad effects on your teeth.

Make visits to the dentist part of your child’s routine – children’s dentistry

When should I start taking my child to the dentist? It’s a common question that many parents will ask themselves. At Harley Street Dental Clinic, we recommend seeing children from the age of 12 months onwards, by which time in most cases their milk teeth will have started to appear.

At our Harley Street clinic we have a specialist children’s dental team, headed up by Professor Raman Bedi. Even if all of your child’s teeth haven’t erupted by the age of 12 months, it is still a good idea to bring them into our Harley Street clinic for a check-up. They may benefit from observing parents or siblings sitting in the chair and opening their mouth to let the dentist look at their teeth, and copying what they see.

Dental visits from an early age will help your child to see their dentist as a friendly face whom they look forward to visiting every six months. Information about good oral health will also be provided in an age-appropriate manner, helping children to develop good habits that will stick with them for life.

Children in the UK still have unacceptably high levels of tooth decay. By bringing them into our Harley Street clinic to visit a dedicated children’s dentist, you can help your child to stay decay-free. If they do need further treatment such as fillings, we use a laser rather than a drill, which is far more comfortable and less distressing for young patients.

Paediatric Dentistry

Children in the UK have some of the worst instances of tooth decay in the world. Half of eight year olds and a third of five year olds suffer from tooth decay, according to The 2013 Children’s Dental Health Survey for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. By the time children reach the age of 15, the percentage with tooth decay has risen to 46%.

childrens dentistryAlthough rates are falling compared with 10 years ago, they are still high. Good dental health at a young age increases the chances of good dental health for life, and children who regularly visit the dentist in their early years are much more likely to see it as a positive experience and nothing to be frightened of.

At Harley Street Dental Practice we care about great dental health for all the family and believe everyone deserves the very best treatment. We also believe prevention is far better than cure, and encourage parents bring their children in from the age of 12 months onwards, coinciding with when the first teeth start to appear.

We have a dedicated paediatric dentist, Professor Raman Bedi, who believes in building up a rapport and a relationship of trust with his young patients, talking to the patient as well as their parents. He leads our team of paediatric dentists, who offer a full range of children’s dental services, including an international childhood caries clinic to help children with extensive decay.

Links have been shown between untreated childhood decay and bigger health problems such as diabetes and heart disease, so ideally preventing but also treating any decay present is vital. Dr Bedi has developed the unique Bedi Oral Well-Being Score, available free to our patients in English and Arabic, and widely used by dentists and dental health educators around the world.

At the heart of our treatment is our firm belief that no child should have untreated cavities. We welcome new child patients of any age and believe we can help each one get the healthy mouth they deserve.
