A dentist can permanently restore your smile with dental implants: here’s how it works

If you lose a tooth, you should visit a dentist quick-smart. Harley Street Dental Clinic offers a number of ways to replace missing teeth, but the best option more often than not is to use dental implants, which provide a highly realistic action and appearance, and a long-term solution to tooth loss.

Dental implants differ from traditional bridgework and dentures because they replace the root portions of lost teeth. In fact, it is best to consider them as bionic tooth roots, which your dentist places directly in your jaw during minor oral surgery. This can be carried out under local anaesthetic or conscious sedation at our Harley Street practice.

dental-implants-harley-streetOne enormous benefit of dental implants is that they actively promote the health of your jaw bone. The jaw bone will start to resorb (shrink) when several or all of the natural tooth roots are missing, which not only makes traditional dentures loose and future placement of dental implants more difficult (although by no means impossible), but also changes the structure of your whole face.

Harley Street Dental Clinic has a highly-experienced implant team comprising Mr Stephen Dover, Dr Pedja Pavlovic and Dr Charlotte Stilwell. They are all fellows of the International Team of Implantology, and have extensive experience in implant treatments, enabling them to treat complex cases where bone loss has already begun.

Even if your own dentist has turned you away for implant treatment because of low bone density, the team at Harley Street Dental Clinic can often help. An additional procedure – a bone graft in the lower jaw or a sinus lift in the upper jaw – may just be required first, to rebuild your jaw bone to adequate levels to support dental implants.

If fear of the dentist has been a contributory factor in your tooth loss, we can place dental implants under conscious sedation, which means you will be awake thus able to cooperate with your dentist, but very relaxed and peaceful, free from pain, and largely unaware of treatment.

Your dentist can combine dental implants with either a bridge, dentures, or a single crown.

How your dentist can replace your missing teeth

Ask any dentist and they will always recommend you replace any missing teeth. At Harley Street Dental Clinic we offer a number of tooth-replacement options, and when you come in for a consultation your clinician will talk you through all the relevant treatments, so that you can make an informed choice.

missing-teethWhy you should replace missing teeth

Missing teeth can make you self-conscious about smiling, but the reasons to replace them are more than just cosmetic. Even one missing tooth puts extra strain on your remaining teeth, making them more prone to premature wear and tear. Your remaining teeth are also highly likely to move into any gaps, becoming harder to keep clean in the process.

What your dentist can do

At Harley Street Dental Clinic we have a unique collection of specialists who can offer a wide range of treatments. When you first come in for a consultation with a dentist, they will conduct a thorough clinical examination and will check your dental health and the condition of your remaining teeth before recommending tooth replacement options.

If your tooth loss has been caused by decay or gum disease, your dentist will include remedies for these conditions in your treatment plan. Our aim at our Harley Street clinic is to restore you to full dental health, and to furnish you with the information and techniques to maintain it for life.

How your Harley Street dentist can replace your missing teeth

Bridges

Bridges can replace one or a few adjacent teeth. They can be supported by surrounding teeth, or by dental implants.

Dentures

We offer a number of denture options at our Harley Street clinic. They may be removable, or affixed to dental implants.

Dental implants

Dental implants enable your dentist to replace the roots of your teeth. Permanently attached to your jaw, they can support a bridge, dentures, or a crown.

Ask a cosmetic dentist: why dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth

A cosmetic dentist has many options to help you replace missing teeth. At Harley Street Dental Practice we believe that, in many cases, the best tooth replacement option is dental implants.

dental-implants-harley-streetDental implants remain the only permanent way a dentist can replace missing teeth. They are small titanium screws that replace the root portion of one or more natural teeth, and your cosmetic dentist can then attach highly realistic-looking new teeth – dentures, crowns, or a bridge – to the abutments on top of the implants.

As well as looking just like natural teeth, restorations attached to implants will also act just like natural teeth, restoring full functionality to your jaw and enabling you to eat a full, healthy, balanced diet.

How treatment works

Our Harley Street clinic is fully equipped to provide implant surgery, using either local anaesthetic or sedation, depending on your preference. Implant placement is meticulously planned to avoid nerves and other vital structures, as well as to ensure that your implants and new teeth can withstand the forces generated by biting and chewing.

We have a unique collection of specialists at our Harley Street practice, so your cosmetic dentist may refer you to one of their implantologist colleagues for implant placement, or may place your implants themself. Whoever carries out implant surgery, you can rest assured that you will be treated with the highest degree of professionalism, care and respect at all times.

Once your dental implants have been placed, they will be left to heal for a couple of months. During this time you may have temporary restorations fitted, so you need not worry that you will struggle without teeth for any period of time.

After your permanent new teeth are attached, you will need to attend regular maintenance and follow-up appointments with your dentist and hygienist at our Harley Street clinic.

How your dentist can restore beauty and functionality to your mouth with dental implants

Every dentist in the land will tell you that you should replace any missing teeth as soon as possible. At Harley Street Dental Clinic, we often find that the best way to do this is with dental implants.

Why you need to replace missing teethdental implants

As your dentist will tell you, when you lose one or more teeth, you lose so much more than your confidence to smile. Other teeth are prone to move into any gaps, becoming twisted, crooked, and harder to clean. Your jaw bone also starts to resorb or shrink back when your tooth roots are missing, which can make dental implant placement more difficult (although not impossible) and can cause the face around your jowls to sag.

Dental implants: the only permanent solution

Dental implants are the only permanent way your dentist can replace your missing teeth. They are small titanium screws placed directly into your jaw bone in a small operation, carried out either under local anaesthetic or conscious sedation here at our Harley Street clinic.
After a healing period, your dentist can then attach permanent replacement teeth to your implants, restoring not just a beautiful smile, but also the ability to eat whatever you choose.
At our Harley Street clinic we can replace your teeth with a combination of dental implants, and either crowns (for single teeth), a bridge or dentures (for multiple or all missing teeth).
With proper home care and regular visits to the dental practice, your dental implants and attached teeth will last you for many years – perhaps even a lifetime.

Dental Implants at Harley Street Dental Clinic

Dental implants are one of the fastest-growing areas of modern dentistry. They provide a permanent solution for missing teeth, one which is both aesthetically pleasing and fully functional.

dental implantsIf you’ve lost one, a few or perhaps all of your natural teeth, for whatever reason, you will know how distressing this can be. You may find yourself embarrassed about smiling and public speaking, could be struggling with ill-fitting unsecured dentures and might even find your diet restricted, putting many healthy options off the menu. In many cases, dental implants offer the perfect solution, and our Harley Street dentists can help.

So, what is a dental implant? Many people colloquially refer to dental implants as replacement teeth, but this isn’t technically correct. Dental implants are in fact replacement tooth roots. They are small, titanium screws that are placed directly in the jawbone, where they integrate with the bone and provide support for replacement teeth in the form of crowns, bridges and secured dentures.

At Harley Street Dental Clinic, our implants team are highly experienced and renowned for their implant treatment. Mr Steve Dover, Dr Pedja Pavlovic and Dr Charlotte Stilwell are all fellows of the International Team of Implantology and are all involved in education in implant dentistry. Their expertise is recognised in the UK and abroad, and as they are all a cosmetic dentist on Harley Street, their patients feel comfortable in their expertise.

Implants are placed in your jawbone in a minor surgical procedure, which can be carried out under local anaesthetic or sedation, depending on your preference. There are several options for implant treatment, but in general they are left to heal and integrate with the bone for a few months before replacement teeth are attached to abutments on the top of the implant. The results look and act very much like natural teeth.

While a single missing tooth will need one implant to replace it, it is also possible to support several new teeth with a single implant. The exact number of implants you will need will be discussed at your dental implant or cosmetic dentistry consultation with our Harley Street dental team.

Ask your dentist about dental implants

Dental implants are the only permanent way your dentist can replace missing teeth. At Harley Street Dental Clinic we benefit from the skills and expertise of some of the UK’s leading implantologists, who can restore your smile with dental implants whether you have lost one, some, or even all of your natural teeth.

How dental implants work

dental implantsA dental implant is a small screw, made from titanium and placed directly in your jaw bone by your dentist in a small surgical procedure, which is carried out here at our Harley Street dental clinic. The implant serves as an artificial tooth root, on to which new teeth – be they crowns, bridges, or dentures – can then be securely attached. Dental implants integrate with your jaw bone and provide a stable base for your new teeth – just like natural tooth roots.

Depending on your clinical need and the number of teeth that need replacing, it is often possible for one dental implant to support several new teeth. Your dentist will carefully plan your implant placement prior to surgery, ensuring that your implants are placed in exactly the right location and at exactly the right angle to support your teeth and withstand the forces generated by biting and chewing. Many patients at our Harley Street clinic who require all the teeth in one jaw replacing are pleasantly surprised to discover that just four precisely-placed implants can support a full arch of new teeth.

Are implants right for everyone?

More people than ever before are having both their smile and the functionality of a full set of teeth restored by dental implants. Even if your own dentist has told you that you are unsuitable for implants because of bone loss (perhaps you have been wearing traditional dentures for some years) the implant surgeons at our Harley Street clinic may be able to help, by carrying out an additional procedure to rebuild your bone.

How your dentist can provide perfect dentures

As a dentist, it is common to see patients of all ages who are distressed because they have lost one or more of their natural teeth. At Harley Street Dental Clinic, our expert team of dental professionals – including dentists and prosthodontists – have helped many patients to restore their smiles and their confidence with the help of dentures.

perfect denturesDentures are not a new concept – even the ancient Egyptians fashioned crude replacement teeth. However, there have been massive advances in the field of prosthodontics (the dental specialism that deals with the restoration and replacement of teeth). At Harley Street Dental Clinic, our prosthodontics team offer a number of denture options for patients who need to replace several or all of their natural teeth.

In some cases, it is possible for your dentist to fit your dentures at the same time as removing failing natural teeth. This is known as “immediate dentures” and means that you won’t be left with gaps in your mouth or no teeth.

If you are interested in immediate dentures, speak to your dentist at your initial consultation. They will carefully examine you and assess if this is the best treatment option in your case.

Dentures can be full – replacing an entire arch of teeth – or partial – replacing some teeth in one arch of the mouth. They can be made from a range of materials, from plastic to porcelain. Your dentist will discuss all your denture options at your initial consultation here in our Harley Street clinic.

As dental professionals we would always recommend replacing your teeth, and dentures are an excellent way to do this. At Harley Street Dental Clinic, we recognise the value of your smile and your oral health, and our team of cosmetic dentists and prosthodontists have many years of training and experience, enabling them to create the perfect dentures for every patient.

Ask your dentist about dental implants

If you have lost one or more teeth, your dentist may recommend using dental implants to replace them. At Harley Street Dental Clinic we have a skilled dental implants team who have helped scores of patients to restore their smiles – and their dental health – with the help of dental implants. We believe that in many cases they are the best, and most cost-effective, way to replace missing teeth.

How dental implants work

dentist about dental implantsDental implants are small titanium screws that your dentist places directly in your jaw bone to replace the root portion of any missing teeth. Our teeth comprise two parts: the crowns that you can see, and the roots under the gum line. Implants integrate with the bone and, because they are osteoconductive, they help to promote bone growth and stop bone loss.

Once the implants have integrated with your jaw bone, your dentist will then fit new artificial teeth on top. These teeth may be in the form of dentures, bridges or crowns, depending on your individual needs, personal preference, and how many teeth need to be replaced.

Meet our implant team

Harley Street Dental Clinic’s implantology team comprises Mr Stephen Dover, Dr Pedja Pavlovic, and Dr Charlotte Stilwell, all of whom are fellows of the International Team of Implantology. They are all highly experienced in providing treatment with dental implants, and can even treat complex cases where patients need bone grafts or sinus lifts to counteract the effects of bone resorbtion. This is common in patients who have worn traditional dentures for several years.

Even if your own dentist has told you that you are not a suitable candidate for implant treatment because you do not have enough bone density, it is worth getting in touch with our Harley Street team of clinicians.

Sinus lifts and bone grafts will add some time on to the overall length of your treatment, but being able to permanently replace your teeth with dental implants will make it worth it.

What your dentist can do to replace missing teeth

Your dentist has many options to replace missing teeth. At Harley Street Dental Clinic we believe that it is always a good idea to replace lost teeth, not least because having gaps in your mouth can damage your confidence in your smile and your self-esteem. However, there are other health reasons why you should replace any missing teeth.

replace missing teethTeeth may be lost through gum disease or tooth decay, accident or injury. Whatever the reason, there are many options available to your dentist to provide you with a new tooth or teeth. This is important because any remaining teeth are prone to try to move into gaps left by missing teeth. In the process they can become crooked and harder to clean, which then increases your risk of plaque build-up, tooth decay and gum diseases – and, ultimately, further tooth loss.

Even one missing tooth increases the strain put on your remaining teeth when you bite and chew food, whilst several or all missing teeth can seriously impact upon your ability to enjoy a healthy and balanced diet. Nobody wants to be stuck on a soft food diet for the rest of their life, with many favourite foods off the menu. That’s why at our Harley Street clinic we recommend you see a dentist as soon as possible after tooth loss.

Treatment options

The best treatment for you will depend on several factors, including how many teeth you have lost, your general dental health, and your personal wishes. These are the options available at our Harley Street practice:

Bridges

Bridges usually comprise a precious metal base and a porcelain tooth or teeth. They may be supported by wings or crowns on adjacent teeth, or by dental implants. Bridges can replace one, two or several adjacent missing teeth.

Dentures

Dentures may be full or partial, and can be made from a range of materials.

Dental implants

Dental implants replace the root portion of a tooth and can support dentures, bridges or single crowns.

Missing teeth: what your dentist can do

There are several options available to a dentist when patients present with missing teeth. At Harley Street Dental Clinic we always recommend replacing lost teeth, and have a variety of treatments to suit all needs and budgets.

missing teethTeeth may be lost through tooth decay, gum disease, accident or injury. If your tooth is knocked out by accident or injury, it is sometimes possible for your dentist to re-implant it in the socket. Should you suffer a mishap that causes you to lose a tooth, you should book an emergency dental appointment at our Harley Street clinic, bringing your tooth with you if you still have it.

A tooth that has been knocked out should be picked up by the crown (the visible part of the tooth in your mouth). Avoid touching the root. Carefully clean the tooth in cold water if necessary and put it in a clean container covered in milk or your own saliva to bring it to your dentist.

If we can’t re-implant your tooth, your dentist will go through all appropriate tooth replacement options.

Bridges

Bridges are a common way to replace one or two adjacent missing teeth. They comprise a solid precious metal base with false teeth attached. For teeth in your smile line, we add porcelain to the base to make it look more natural. Bridges may be supported by crowns or wings on adjacent teeth, or may be attached to dental implants.

Dentures

Dentures can also be attached to dental implants, or can be made to fit snuggly over the gums. Partial dentures replace a few missing teeth while full dentures replace all teeth in one jaw. At our Harley Street clinic, our prosthodontist will create highly natural-looking dentures for you.

Dental implants

Dental implants replace the root portion of a missing tooth. Crowns, bridges or dentures are then attached on top. They are the only permanent way to replace missing teeth.
